We are pleased to announce that we now have a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist who is now accepting new patients for specialized eye care.
Ophthalmology in Westford, MA
Animals both big and small can be born with or succumb to ocular diseases, and injuries which may require specialized medical or surgical treatment. Our ophthalmology team uses specialized equipment to diagnose and treat eye disease in your beloved pet.
Whether your pet requires medication, surgery or ongoing monitoring, Dr. Buechner provides a compassionate, patient-focused approach to meet each pet’s unique needs.
As Dr. Buechner is trained in treating eye issues in all species, she is happy to examine pets of any species that can be brought to Westford Veterinary Emergency Referral Center for examination.

What to Expect During your Appointment
*We utilize fear-free techniques to decrease stress and improve the overall exam experience for our patients. *
- An ophthalmology patient questionnaire will be e-mailed prior to appointment.
- One of our amazing ophthalmology technicians will go over a detailed history regarding your pet and current or past ophthalmic concerns.
- The ophthalmology technician will then perform two diagnostic tests: Schirmer tear test-evaluating tear production and checking intraocular pressure (glaucoma test).
- The ophthalmologist will then put a special stain in the eyes (fluorescein stain) to check for corneal ulcerations. This stain also assists in the diagnosis of ocular surface disease such as dry eye, and obstruction to the normal drainage of tears through to the nose.
- The ophthalmologist will turn out the lights and use a portable, slit-lamp biomicroscope to evaluate the periocular structures such as the eyelids and the front half of the eye. Then she will use her indirect ophthalmoscope headset to evaluate the retina.
- A thorough discussion of the examination findings, likely diagnosis, options for further work-up and medical and/or surgical treatment with the ophthalmologist will then conclude the appointment.
